I just bought a 1985 el camino and it wobbles when turning on corners more than 20mph. The front end wobbles left to right causing the car to feel uncontrollable. It stops once I left off the gas.

You guys have any thoughts?

Update :
I replaced the springs and shocks. It reduced the wobble but it still pretty dangerous.

Then I noticed the the left wheel had a lower offset than the right. I looked at the left upper control arm and it had more shims than the right . I think this might be the problem.

Could I just pop the ball joint up top and remove the shims without pulling off the whole spindle?

I would get it to a shop that does suspension work asap if you're not OK doing it yourself. If nothing else they can tell you what is wrong and you can fix it. It could be any number of things or combination of bad tie rods, ball joints, bushings, etc. in there that are worn, broken, or out of adjustment in a really bad way.

Make sure the lug nuts are tight for starters
good point. also check the tires for bulges due to broken cords. had that happen to me once, could NOT figure it out until a tire shop guy was like hey lookey here.... would wobble around corners like you describe.

Check lug nuts, suspension parts, possible bad tires, and maybe worn wheel bearings?

Have wheel balance checked. As others mentioned bad tires and maybe a warped rim can cause issues.

If you've got problems like that, be sure to check the entire front end. Wheels, tires, ball joints, control arms, tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and center link. I had some front end problems with my truck recently. I ended up having to replace the pitman arm, idler arm, center link and both tie rods. I had already replaced the upper control arms and all of the ball joints. My truck is an '88 GMC. It's almost as old as a G body. The front end was all worn out.

It's definitely worth the $$$ to have a safe driving vehicle and peace of mind.

Thanks for the replies. I updated my first post. I think I might take out the shims on uca and get an alignment.

Any other suggestions is more than appreciated

Personally, I wouldn't mess with the shims. You'll probably cause more problems than you'll fix. If you're gonna take it for an alignment or to have the car checked out, I would take it as is or have it towed if you feel that's it's dangerous to drive.
