I thought in the county where I live in TX the cars had to be 25 years old until we could drop the emissions tests and have just a safety inspection. Turns out gasoline cars only need to be 24 years old so I can drive my car about a year from now without being inspected. I've heard some counties or states don't have inspections. What are the reasons for not having inspections in some places? What's your inspection cut-off year?

Sadly, California ditched the rolling exemption and now only cars dated 1975 or older are exempt. 🙁

They don't inspect any cars where I live, but I wouldn't doubt they will add something in the next decade, especially with everything turning "green".

My car is 28 years old and to me a car that old shouldn't be tested. Plus, how many cars do you see on the road that are 20 years or older that really have good emissions anyways?

Florida ditched it's emissions inspection years ago when we ditched the Democratic governor. Thank You Jeb Bush! Yet another reason I like to vote Republican. So now we have no inspections of any kind except if a cop pulls you over to be sure your vehicle is safe.

One of the only good things Gov. Jesse Ventura did up here was cancel emmisions testing and inspections in '98. Although if you get pulled over you can still get cited for equiptment violations.

In texas it's just the counties with big cities that have inspections. It's really annoying how if I lived 50 miles away in the next county I could modify my car/truck any way I wanted. But maybe it's for the best cuz I would've probably thrown all my money at my truck instead of the cutlass.

Here in VA, You HAVE to have your car inspected if you have regular tags on it, But if you have Antique tags(like me) than you don't have to have it inspected, You just have to do a "Self Inspection" to make sure everything is in goo working order. But if you get pulled by a cop he can do a inspection on it himself, And if he finds any problems at all than he can write you a ticket for it, Or if he finds more than a couple, He can have it towed.

While I think that California laws are ridiculous, visiting the big cities shows the very good reasons that emissions restrictions exist.

In Ohio, 7 out of 88 counties have testing. I unfortunately live in one of them. We dont have safety inspections, but you can get ticketed for having stuff that is unsafe on your car. The only "visual" inspection they do is see if there is a catalytic converter on the car, so you might be able to get away with an engine swap and hollowed out cats if you can somehow make that pass. I believe cars that are 25 years old are exempt. I think that you can be exempt if you have a receipt saying you put so much money into trying to get it to pass.

I had my 80 malibu inspected back in mississippi where I first got the car and they figured if the thing runs, drives, and has a license plate then they just slap a sticker on the thing. Now that I'm in san antonio, TX I found out that antique cars don't need an inspection. The true trouble for me comes from the fact that my malibu has antique plates from mississippi and those are good until 2099 (lifetime registration) and of course I don't want to switch to TX cause then I could only drive it to expos and car shows. Luckily the cops or anyone hasn't given me any trouble. If anyone's wondering why this malibu has followed me from MS, to ME, and down here to TX, its because of being in a military family lol.
