I want to verify my timing is correct on my stock sbc 350 with HEI distributor and new plugs and wires. I plan to buy a timing light and try doing it myself. I have a faint ping at idle and not sure if the secondaries are fully opening during WOT. The car has great acceleration from a dead stop. I also get cracking and popping from the exhaust when let off the gas. I'm wondering if I should replace the fuel pump too? I'm on the right to solve my issue?

I can't imagine any way to get an actual ignition ping at idle. I think it's not timing related. If it was that far advanced you'd never get it started. It's still a good idea to check your timing but I don't think it's the source of the noise you're hearing. What carb are you running? If it's a Quadrajet have someone step on the pedal (engine OFF) while you look. Be aware that the choke must be fully open for the secondaries to unlock. The same test applies for a Carter/Edelbrock or a mechanical secondary Holley. On a vacuum secondary Holley you can use a paperclip to verify operation of secondaries. Explanation here about half way down the page: http://www.holley.com/TechService/FAQ.asp . The cracking and popping under decel is likely an exhaust leak close to the engine. Why do you think it needs a fuel pump?

Thank for the info. I have an edelbrock 1406 electric choke. Disregard the fuel pump statement.

I have flowtech headers and thrush exhaust. I suspected an exhaust could be cause both issues. I plan check the exhaust and check the choke
