I want to have my exhaust exit in front of my rear wheels on my '85 Monte. However, I heard somewhere that legally, the exhaust needs to exit 14 inches behind the door, which would land about in the middle of my rear wheel. Does anybody know if this is true?

It's illegal for the exhaust to exit infront of the rear axle. The exhaust must exit behind the rear axle.

Depends on the state I'm guessing. Here there is no such law. Your best bet is to call a couple exhaust shops and ask them. They would be able to tell ya cause they have to abide by the laws.

Personally I wouldn't put the exhaust so close to the cab. Not only cause of the noise but cause of the fumes also.

There have been cars from the factory that have had the exhaust exit in front of the wheels. I personally have two cars with exhaust that exits right under the car. The noise isn't bad if you have carpeting of some sort, and the fumes are non-existent. If you're going to an exhaust shop that says it has to abide by the law, you're going to the wrong exhaust shop. 😀 I say find a decent shop that will build the system you want.

Yep. Here in PA it must exit the perimeter of the body. In front of rear wheels is good.
i don't mean to steal your thread kustomss but 455rocket would you happen to know the emissions and inspections requirements for these cars in pa

Sure 79 drag car. The safety inspection is the same as your gettin on your 95 van. The emissions test is a visual and gas cap test. The visual means it has to have all the emissions equipment it came with from the factory, egr, air pump, cat etc. Some counties only have a visual. If you drive the car less than 5000 miles a year you get an exempt sticker, no gas cap testing or visual. Best way around all this bs is a classic tag.
