I have a 1987 Monte Carlo LS with a 4.3. Currently it has a the stock exhaust in very good condition. I am not looking for performance gains but any are nice. I do like the look of the duals out the back similar to the SS. Is there an inexpensive way to do this conversion? Has anyone done this? Are there pictures of the way this was done?

Unfortunately I am limited to bolt on parts and will be doing this on jack stands.

no worries as no gbody came from the factory with dual exhaust. The Monte SS* is a cat-back system which splits the exhaust in 2 after the convertor. The 442 uses a single in and dual out muffler to give the appearance of dual exhaust. So either system should work for you.

*note the monte SS uses a different convertor flange than the other gbodies IIRC

Other than it sounded amazingly well for what it was, I always thought my stock 442 exhaust was worthless. Single 2 1/2" in/out cat into single 2 1/2" in, dual 2 1/4" out muffler, dual 2 1/4" tail pipes. But, the stock [9] 307 had no power so it didn't need much . . . and the [9] was the HOT V8 engine!! The exhaust did sound REALLY nice though if you can pick one up cheap . . . or emulate it with aftermarket parts?

For my 86' Regal with a 307 I looked at 3 stock replacement exhaust systems made by Walker for GN, Monte SS and 442 all for the 86' model year.
The GN had a single muffler behind the rearend with two tailpipes coming out which was not what I was looking for.
The Monte SS was a 2" catback system with a pair of larger center/offset mufflers that allows the option of aftermarket mufflers but the catalytic flange was different for my 307.
So I ended up going with a 86' 442 catback system which is 2-1/4' and has two separate small mufflers that are unique to this set up so there are really no aftermarket options for mufflers but the system was a bolt on for the Regal with the same catalytic mount.
So I would go with whichever system matches your catalytic mount to be a direct bolt on
Here is my Regal below with Walker's 86' 442 stock replacement exhaust.

Won't he have the cross member issue if he goes with that setup?

Sound's like he has somewhat limited resources. In that scenario if he just wants the look and sound of duals, I would do the single in dual out muffler with some nice tips. Easiest, cheapest setup to execute.

Yes, look and sound is what I am going for. I have a good running 4.3 and in reality I just cruse around with the car so more power is not a goal. If the 4.3 ever does go then I will get a 350 till then it is for cosmetics. I like the one in tow out with nice tips idea. Is there a pre made kit for this or do I just need to find the parts?

No crossmember issues, these are factory replacement systems so they bolt up to the catalytic where both the Monte SS and 442 systems then split off to two separate mufflers and tailpipes so it depends on the style of the catalytic flange the 4.3 has as to which of the systems will bolt up (if any) and maybe even the GN version with the single in dual out muffler will work.
