Would I be harming my engine in any way by setting up a str8 back dual exhaust? I was thinking of str8 pipe from headers to mufflers to str8 pipe in rear with maybe a bend to exit behind rear wheels. or should i have bends somewhere in there? What do you guys think is best for an exhaust setup?
most dual exhausts are basically straight pipes with nothing more than a bend for the axle. however, not having mufflers will be very loud and will get annoying after awhile.
it won't hurt anything, but except for extreme top end, a good x-pipe and properly sized pipes/mufflers will produce more power.
Mandrel bent means that the exhaust pipe is bent without reducing the interior diameter of the pipe, this is to keep a consistant size throught the exhaust system. This will improve performance, and reduce popping, or uneven backpressure. It is more important with smaller diameter systems. What kind of setup are you running? 2.5" dual exhaust either way is plenty for a stock/mild small block. The mandrel bent will cost you a lot more! Just something to keep in mind.
Let's clear some things up. You mentioned that you want straight pipes, and by the responses I'm guessing most people aren't reading your next line that says connected to the mufflers.
Basically, when someone says straight pipes, it doesn't mean they are straight, it meant they are running without mufflers. So the setup you are asking about is a typical dual exhaust setup. And it will work fine on your car.
But, do you already have a cross member for duals? Do you have or plan to run headers?
If you are running a basically stock engine (with manifolds) they can route the pipes along one side for the transmission cross member then split from there. It's still duels and will work fine. That is how mine is set up now. What's your set up?
