I know you are not supposed to try and fix anything anymore but I can't help myself. I just fixed my big Sears microwave. It was dead to the world and inside I found a 20 amp glass fuse just like our cars use. Swapped it out and she works great. Now my 5 year old Vizio flat screen TV started shutting itself off. It finally went to rainbow colored snow then shut down permanently. Now it won't even power up. Is it worth opening or or should I just junk it?

Electronics are disposable these days. If it's older than 5yrs, junk it. Unless you're looking for a little project to tinker with, then crack it open, but I wouldn't expect a miraculous outcome.......

Understood. Just curious if there is a fuse or breaker or fusible link type protection. We get power surges here and that can take out stuff that is otherwise OK.

Lots of people fixing them. Many boards are interchangeable. You've got nothing to lose, give it a whirl.

OK so worth a shot. My electronics is very limited but an obvious flaw I can deal with. Have multi-meter, will travel.

Buy your new TV first...then get a dang good surge protector. I'm not a wire biter, but I'm sure there are some things you can do to help protect your TV investment from power surges. But with 8K coming out, you should be able to get most 4K tvs on the cheap.

Boom:

When the 65" 4K's first came out, I was there. Samsung has one of the best pictures IMO. Sony does too. But that's just me. I'm not a videophile or any of that, but I paid around 2800 for ours and it was on sale. It was top of the line stuff, but I didn't mind paying for it then. It's got that "hidden wire" thing on it with the separate port box. Don't get that. The fiber optic cable toasted out in less than a month. Got a replacement and it's been fine since, but....

So for less than 600 for similar now? Get it, then tinker away with your old one. Then when you get it working again, put it in the bedroom....on the ceiling... 🙂

"hard reset"

Yes, I did that first off. That is when the colored snow appeared and it hasn't powered up since that. I also have everything on a surge protector strip so maybe it just went bad. The Wife is aching to go buy something new but I have my Mom's big Samsung stashed away. it's so high def you can tell the Weather guy needs a shave. Now I see why I spot these flat screen jobs out in the trash all the time. Planned obsolescence?

Seems like ever since that useless "HD TV" law went into effect & they started to push the flat screens I've seen more of them than the old long lasted tube TV's. I used to see them either stacked like cord wood or dumped where ever on the side of the road in rural areas. These flat screens are like most smart phone, out of date as fast as they hit the market. Can't sell new $XXXX TV's if the old ones can last/be easy to service.
