I have a '79 Regal with a 350/350 combo...the other day I romped on it a little bit, the transmission kicked down and then shifted correctly, but it didn't feel right (almost like it was slipping). I cruised on to the house (less than 1/4 mile) and when I went out the next day it wouldn't go into any gear...no forward no reverse. I replaced the vacuum modulator and hoses and checked the linkage. The transmission was supposedly rebuilt prior to me buying the car. The fluid was red and did not have a burnt smell. I would think that I would at least be able to manually shift in forward or have reverse, but alas...nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this forum and GMs, but not working on cars/trucks...

it may not be the trans. it could be the rear axle.
jack up the rear and set it on stands. then start the car and put it in gear. see if the wheels spin. also have someone available to look under the car and see if the driveshaft is spinning. during all this BE CAREFUL!!!!!!

I had the same problem i broke the sprag in the trans once this happens you have no forward or reverse time for a rebuild. Make sur they install a heavy duty sprag at that time.

That's a good point also,I would bet something internal let go.

Thanks for the responses...I was hoping I wouldn't have to tear into it. The engine and transmission were supposedly rebuilt, but I think I am going to pull both and go through them so I know what has been done...again thanks for the quick responses.
