Autozone brake clean is a great indicator of gun powder residue. Fog the METAL of your favorite firearm, either before or after cleaning, and take note of the areas that appear rust-like. It was on sale last time I was at AZ so I bought I couple cans. I have old Russian guns that shoot corrosive ammo so I will have to try this.

We kept brake cleaner on hand for the .50's to help clean them after taking them to the range. Even good for M240B's & M249 SAW's. I miss range day for the machine guns.
