Hey Guys, I would love some input on a Ford 9 inch that i am looking at getting for my El Camino. i was able to score a Ford 9" from a friend of mine here at college. it came off a 70s truck and is giving it to me for free. was wondering what i i would have to do to the rear to make it fit in the rear of my Elky. Thanks Guys!

Well I had to do some research myself after reading your post because I have seen alot of 9 inch rears local on CL for $100 bucks or less out of old trucks. It looks like 70-77 trucks have a 57.4" track width and el-caminos have a 57.8" so that seems doable, but I'm sure someone has firsthand knowledge on here. The one thing I was wondering is what you would do for the upper control arm attach points since they are cast into the center section.

Well stock G-body housing width axle flange to axle flange is 52" so you are probably going to have to have it narrowed. Then once you have it narrowed, your going to have to get the axles shortened and resplined. Your also going to have to weld on brackets for the control arms and spring perches. But you would probably want to weld the brackets on first and then narrow it so you can bring it to a shop to make sure it is all straight and not warped from welding. There are shops that can straighten everything out but I don't know how much it costs. Then you are probably going to have to shorten the drive shaft. Heres a bracket kit from quick performance that is cheaper then the speedway motors kit and also includes the spring cups.

Kris, I noticed you forgot to leave the link?? Thanks.. i think i am going to just grab it and keep it until i blow my 7.5 up and go from there as a back up that way i have something already in the works so when my 7.5 blows i can swap it out. Thanks For The Advice Guys!!

Thanks Guys, i was also thinking about getting just a different houseing and just swapping the differiental and axles over. Thanks for your advice Everybody!!

There is no reason to narrow a housing to take care of an inch on each side...

You will need new wheels with different backspacing to correct it but narrowing a rear 2 inches is a little ridiculous.

9in housings are easy to convert because the area you need to add mounts two is mild steel vs a cast iron center like rears w/o thirdmembers.

Its not very difficult with some amateur welding and fabbing skills.

I've gone through this, or at least thought it through a year ago when I wanted to have a stock 9" housing narrowed to fit my '87. By the time you buy the brackets and pay to have the rear narrowed (unless your REALLY good at welding that you can do it yourself) it's cheaper and far easier to just buy a housing thats ready to go from Quick Performance.

I believe their housings are around $350-$400 without axles but have the correct width and trailing arm attachments already setup for the G-body.
