Hello,

I have owned my 1986 442 for 11 years now! All original.

I would like to make contact with any 442 owners from South FLorida that would recommend a reputable mechanic. Time for an engine overhaul is getting near.

Thanks!

Matty

Welcome from buffalo, ny! Post some pics up of your 442! Are you planning on keeping it all original with the 307? A 350 olds is basically a direct swap and you get more bang for the buck.

If keeping the "vin 9" and numbers matching is important to you and it may very well be with a 442 then by all means rebuild the 307.

If its not you will get a lot more bang for the buck acquiring a donor 350/403 Olds small block IE identical physical exterior dimensions to your 307. More horsepower, more torque, just as reliable, and street-able for the same money. A direct bolt up replacement.

There is a board member who bought and has a great running rebuilt & internally upgraded vin 9 307. But I can't recall his username and have not seen him post in a while. He did have specific info on the upgrades & specs. I think it ran like a basement 14 on pump gas. But again the person who had it built spent more and did more work to get less than had he used a 350/403. Just depends on whats important to you. Most who rebuild a 307 vin 9 or otherwise really don't know motor building and what it needs and end up with little more than stock power.

Myself I put my vin 9 in my garage for safe keeping and for the next owner should someone want to give me stupid money for my car so they can do a concors type restoration. I didn't want to lose perspective buyers or lose value on the car because I no longer had the numbers matching vin9 at sale time even though I planned on keeping the car. I then built and installed another motor that better met my goals including something that fit without having to cut or weld or radically modify the body. You can see it in my signature and pics.

If the motor needs a rebuild the transmission may as well. Especially if you plan to power up and since you have the motor out anyway as you save much labor. I had great luck with both my high performance 200-4R builds by Lonnie Diers at http://www.extremeautomatics.com. He provides a warranty, ships, has good price to quality, stands behind his product and has a great track record for building a lasting 200-4R. Even when put behind some brutal power plants.

Last in addition to here you may get more specific motor building advise and experience at http://www.oldspower.com. Come to think of it there is a good experienced performance Olds engine builder from Florida that frequents that site. Can't think of his username or the machine shop that he works at either at the moment. Hope that helps good luck and have fun.

Welcome aboard. Matty.
