Im new to the G-body scene ( not the GM scene though) and im wondering how hard it is to swap from a Pontiac V8 to a chevy V8.Are they the same? does pontiac have Chevy V8's ?

Cause im really interested in a grand prix and a carlo. Thanks in advance

Pontiacs had both chevy and pontiac motors. But it doesn't really matter. Because it's easy to put a SBC into any g-body car.

does it need some engine mounts work or change them? and can you use the accessories from a pontiac to a chevy

They are completely different engines. It needs different mounts, starter, accessory brackets, and some wires will need to be lengthened/re-routed. It may also need a different trans depending what it has now. You may be able to use the power steering pump and alternator, just not with the Pontiac brackets.

But, my point is it will be a bolt in swap. No cutting or welding.

so if im buying a Grand prix that had a pontiac engine, will the swap be as easy as 305 chevy to 350 chevy?

Sorry im really not a noob in mechanic but with old school mechanic im a noob

Pretty much. You will need a chevy transmission too. And if you change the transmission type you will also need a crossmember.

If possible, try to find a doner car wigh a chvy drive train. That way you can get all you accesory stuff, mounts, and any misc. little things you might want.

What are your plans with the car?

It will not be as easy since they use different parts. You can find all the parts you need at a junk yard or Ebay. All you need is the different frame mounts to get the engine in, then you will need to adjust/change the wiring, get all of the Chevy brackets/accessories, and maybe get a Chevy bolt pattern trans if your car does not have one.

If you are good with cars, it should be pretty self explanatory once you get the engine in. It is not going to be like putting a fuel injected LS1 into a g body where you would need custom stuff and fabrication.

Why don't you explain what it takes? What is easy for you might not be easy for other people. It does not really help the original poster when all you say is that it's easy.

Naturally it would be easier with less parts scrounging to go from a chevy 305 to a chevy 350 than it would be to go from a Pontiac 301 to a chevy 350. Like wise it would be easier to go to Pontiac 400 from a Pontiac 301. 😉 But if you are able to do a swap you could probably do any chevy to chevy pontiac to pontiac, chevy to pontiac or pontiac to chevy. It just takes a little more planning and parts scrounging to make it go smooth when changing brands. If you want to use a chevy 350 because its most common and you want the cheapest possible swap plus cheapest add on performance parts start with a monte 305. Whats best depends on where you are starting from and what your goals are.
