lagrange, ky
hey guys. i'm in the middle of a sbc swap on my 83 regal. the other night i took off the hard line that went from the tank to the evap canister. i blocked it off in the frame. well the last night when i got home and opened the garage i was almost knocked out with gas fumes. the tank had biult pressure and popped a fuel linein the back of the car. was like a half tank of gas in the floor and it was still spraying. loosened gas cap to release the pressure. can i put a vented gas cap on it or does one have a better solution?

note: currently no motor in car and fuel line was plugged.

you plugged the vent line i would think. put the vented cap on it. i got rid of my canister but left the line open.

that what i was gonna do but decided to close it because the car is bagged and lays frame. if i decided to drag it i don't want the sparks to ignite the fumes in the line.

When I swapped in the 455, I got rid of the vapor canister.
I removed as much of the line as I could only as far back as the driver's floor and then I pinched off the line.
I went back to the tank and unhooked the rubber hose from that line that I had just removed/pinched shut.
I then got one of those plastic rear axle vents and pushed into the hose and tied it up behind the heatsheild for the fuel line.

Wouldn't that still cause a hazard in that situation? It would be venting fumes under and around the car, which could be kinda bad if there is any sparks.

I know you are probably trying to clean everything up under the hood, but your best thing to do would probably be putting the charcoal canister back in. It wont let any fumes hang around the car and you wont blow up. Find a way to keep it out of peoples sight or make it look good.

The way I have it on my car is fine. There is absolutely no smell of fuel, even with a full tank right after filling, or sitting in my garage. Over 1500 miles on the car since completion and no problems. The vent itself is hidden behind a sheild, and has plenty of distance between it and anything potentially warm. With the amount of air that moves underneath the car, even if there were any noticible vapors, they're dispersed so quickly they'd never have the opportunity to ignite.
