Hey guys I need to start hitting my local junkyard every week to start pulling parts from cars as they come in. My previous junkyard rummages have always been for parts from small imports and the like.

So what tools do you guys make sure you have with you when you are going to the yard to strip parts off a G body? Every car has its own unique quircks that sometimes require tools out side of the norm. So what should I pack? I will be looking for things like chassis and suspension parts, an 8.5 or Ford 9 rear, bumpers possibly some body panels things like that. Should not be to complicated but just thought that I would ask from those with the experience.

Oh and anything in particular I should keep my eye out for?

You will need: 7,10,11,13,15, and 17mm wrenches and sockets, and an 18mm wrench for power steering hoses. Also, a Torx T-47 for seat belts, and a T15 for small trim screws. Depending on the engine in question, you will also need a selection of SAE sizes such as 9/32, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 3/4,11/16,etc. as well. I also like to carry a set of wire cutters or tin snips with me for those times when you gotta cut wiring and such. Of course, a BFH and vice grips go without saying.

Look for 87-88 power seat tracks with 3 motors, 8.5 rear axles, aluminum hoods, core supports and bumpers, fast ratio steering boxes, F-41 suspension package on a V8 car, etc.

dont forget WD-40.

Damn I knew I forgot something! How could I forget the WD40? I will have to go get a can.

or bolt antiseize, anyway most of the bolt sizes are 10mm to 15mm but you'll need hex screwdrivers for things like the lower part of the front bumper and headlight bezels.

I like the "P-B BLASTER" better for loosening rust....havent bought WD-40 in 8 years.

Don't forget the screwdrivers and ratchet/socket extensions! One of my tool sets is a craftsman case that has just about all the sockets you should need, from 1/4"-3/4", and something like 5mm-18mm, I don't think there's a 19 in there (I believe it may be needed for the nuts on the F41 bars at the front, but I'm not positive). For the bigger bolts I like to bring along a breaker bar and 1/2" drive ratchet, and a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, just because some of those bolts are somewhat stubborn at times.

If you don't already have a mechanic's type set of tools, spring the extra $30 for another 50 pieces and 1/2" drive sockets.

Oh I have a full set of Craftsman sockets and wrenches for standard and metric along with several other sets that had been my fathers. I wanted to keep that stuff at home where it is in my roll away and organized so I know right where it is to grab when working.

The purpose of this case was to have a set to keep in my truck basically just for going to the yards to pull parts for my Olds. Most of the tools I tossed in are from my local farm supply in a WalMart Black and Decker $10 tool box.

Good to know about the 19mm for F41 bars, I will have to get one.

I have also added a couple of adjustable wrenches, channel locks, magnetic dish for keeping nuts and bolts in one place, knee pads (my knees are bad and kneeling in gravel sucks) oh and a utility knife.

So I need to pick up a 19mm socket, possibly another extension or two and some sort of penetrating oil.

The bolts on the jounce bars are 18mm you need a socket and a wrench or 2 wrenchs
