So I'm new to g bodies and I was wondering what the stock th350 can handle and what the stock rear end in a non ss 79 El Camino is and what it can handle. thanks.

12's in the 1/4 a few times. With slicks. The rear is the weak link, actually its the axles. You can get a 28 spline posi unit and Turbo Buick replacement axles, it will go into the 11's pretty easy with slicks and regular abuse for a while.

The TH350 is all about how you drive and doing proper burnouts, per the instructions that comes with the shift improver kit you choose.

A stock 1979 Th350... if it has a big black plastic plug on the driver's side it will be a TH350c with a lockup torque converter. if you ever dig into it, MAKE SURE. The parts on the inside and converters are different. A TH350c in bone stock form that is in good shape can handle 350-450 crank hp. Like Bar50 said it's all how you drive it. The 7.5 in stock form is only really good fdor 350-400hp before you risk breaking something. 26 spline axles and 2.29 gears (check your RPO codes, I don't know where they would be on an El Camino, but it lists all the 3 letter codes for every option your car has. MX9 for example is the TH200c and LD5 is the 231 NA V6, etc. The best one to find is G80, which gm used throughought the years to designate if a car came with a posi differential or not.) If you have 3.08:1 or lower (numerically) you have a series two carrier and can only get derpy highway gears. If you have 3.08 or above, you can get a set of 3.23, 3.42, 3.55, 3.73 etc gears because it would be a series three. You can get series three gears to fit a series two, the difference being the series 3 are a 1/4 inch thicker than the series 2. Plus the 28 spline axles that Bar50 mentioned. TA Performance makes a stud girdle for the 7.5 that bolts on in place of the diff cover and stiffens it up a ton. You can use drag radials but even with all these mods if you are gonna make some serious power and put full on slicks, you will rip that rear right in half.
