Im preparing to switch my dash out of my 83 monte for a dash in an 86 grand prix. Its in perfect condition and has everything but I was wondering if there was anyone who knows maybe from experience anything I might need or that il have to change in order for it to work??? I have aftermarket gauges so that should be the easy part. Also can someone tell me if the main wiring harness in the dash that plugs into the column and other areas can be swapped with the one in my monte now because the hilljock cut all the wires in the GP so the harness is facked up???

I'm pretty much in the same situation. I have a GP dash going into a Malibu wagon. I would also like to go with aftermarket gauges...and the wiring harness was cut going to the plug. My own stupidity at the time. I was too eager to get the dash out of the car that I didn't care about the wiring.
I think using aftermarket gauges should make the installation less difficult. However, some of the other functions such as heat & A/C, etc. will still need to be connected. I think by using the existing Chevy harness, we could be creative...and I don't mean by doing a hack job either.
I know these dashes were installed in other G-body cars by others. It would be good to hear what we'll expect to encounter.

83MONTESS & Longroof79,
You might find this interesting! In Mexico, the Monte Carlo came from the factory with a Grand Prix dash, 350 LM1, a 4-speed trans., and a dana rear end! Now that would be a fun factory clone to build! (do a Mexican Monte Carlo search!)

I think Malibu Racing has a thread on after market gauges in the Grand Prix dashes!

Thanks Doug,
Yeah, I'm aware of the Mexican built Monte Carlo SS coming with a GP dash and other goodies. I'll see if I can find the thread on MR regarding aftermarket gauges.

Anyone have any VDO 2 1/16" mechanical gauges for sale plus speedo and tach?

Never messed with a ponti dash, but I did go from chevy to buick, I retained the factory cluster (no gauges). I got lucky that the buick and chevy used the same plastic connector for the back of the cluster (I didn't take the wiring for the donor dash either 😳 ).

The biggest thing is getting the dash to fit properly. If you've ever had any dash out of a g-body, you may have noticed the extra tabs along the bottom of the windshield. I had to bend some the chevy mounting tabs out of the way, and use different ones, which I had to pry outward for the buick dash. It took many test fits, until I got the dash to sit correct and level, without being wavy. I retained the chevy headlamp switch along with the dash mounted wiper switch, buick had a different light switch connector, and a stalk wiper switch. Ventilation system, 😳 , I omitted long before the dash swap, so I have no clue what would have been needed to make it work (btw I regret doing that, lol).

I worried about the wiring last, all I did, was find out which each wire did, by using a test lamp and turning on and off accessories (turns, highs, back lamps, fuel level, etc), and marked each function. Then I looked at the back of the Buick cluster and traced each path on the printed curcuit, marked each path. I then rearranged the wires in the connector to correspond with the buicks cluster. Lots of goofing around to make it look good, and work properly, but when there's nothing else available, you use what you have access to (I needed a dash, but couldn't find a chevy one in good shape). Hope that helps a little, lol.

Another thing is when I go to pull out the GP dash, how easy is it to crack or break? The car has been in a salvage yard since 2001 but all the windows are up and sealed so not much moisture has gotten to it. My dash right now is junk so I dont care how I get it out all im worried about is gettin the GP dash out without breaking it and the interchange between the main wiring harnesses. Any suggestions???
