So I got a 307 with the 4 barrel carb and I was told I needed a new one or get it rebuilt. Now I'm not really a mechanic but I'm wondering if I should try to do it? Or just buy a new one and if I do buy a new one what should I get? Thx
I'll assume it's a Quadrajet carb, and if it is then this video is a great step-by-step guide that basically only requires a screwdriver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLpUqS9zrP8
You'd have to find the exact model number, and search around on the interwebs a bit, but a rebuild kit is anywhere from $20-$60 from what I've seen. I hope this helps, if not then a Quadrajet carb can be found on many many cars from the 60's up into the 80's I believe. Or you could just get a cheap off-the-shelf Edelbrock or Holley carb http://quadrajetparts.com/ also has a good selection of parts and rebuild kits
I thought about getting like a 600 cfm or 650 kinda in my price range and I want to upgrade some things on the car because I want to dd it. What carb will be best for a dd? I kinda don't want a lot of problems with it. Will a 600 or 650 bolt right on or will I need a adapter?
I totally agree with BonnevilleWagon! Tecg8 builds great Quadrajets and I would also keep the Quadrajet. I'm thinking that a Quadrajet carb probably has the most amount of R&D dollars over any other carb.
Do NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT get the adapter and slap the 650 on there. It will get horrible mileage and only perform good for a couple weeks and then fall flat on it's face. That's Chevrolet talk. Throw out all the Chevrolet guy's recommendations when doing Olds or be sorry! http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Modify-Ro ... 1932494189 Go to the library and try to get this book FREE first. You'd be surprised it's not at every library but a good library will have it. I'll save all the technical explanations for Cliff Ruggles but basically the math is all wrong and the 307 breathes 'shallow' compared to a chevrolet b/c it has less top end, and it just works a lot better w/ the stock QJ on it pushing just 480 CFM. If you do decide 'fk it' and to just grab a carb, go with a 500cfm only. The edelbrock is ok but the 307 still works a lot better w/ the stock qjet. An extra 100-150 CFM is great on a 350 since it has the top end to move that air, but in a 307 it literally 'sucks'. Just to be clear, if we were talking Chevrolets the 650 on an adapter w/ a spacer plate set-up would definitely have been the way to go.
