I'm just wondering if its just my car or what. I have a 1985 olds cutalss supreme brougham, with the chevy 305 in it. only mod that i am aware of is the eldelbrock performer intake, and a quadrajet of a 73 olds 350 rocket. o it has dual exhaust with blue bomb glass packs also. Anyway thecar is veryvery gutlass, i mean it seems to have no power until you hit about 2200 rpm, i havent' checked the timing yet but i am hoping it is out because i am sure it should have more pawer then that any thoughts???

Well, the 305 only has 150hp in base guise, and 180-190 in HO form. In a 3400lb G body with bad gearing, it's a slow engine. The intake is probably only worth 5-10hp, the carb is a wash with stock. It may even be worse because it could be jetted wrong, or be off an application for a larger engine. I would run the numbers off the carb and see what it came on when new.

yeah ikinda figured, allthough this car is like can't even do a brake stand bad, i didn't think they were that gutlas, oh well i have an old 350 i could rebuild and throw in if i want more power

Even with a 350, it won't be all that good until you do something about the horrible gearing.

agreed. Half the problem is the factory gearing of 2.14 or 2.40 somethings.

Throw a set of 3.73's in there and it will wake up pretty well. Throw a better engine in it and really wake it up.

anyone kn ow what rear end normally came in a 91 camaro?? That or i have a few sxles kickin around here i will have to look at and figure out the gearing.

3.73s will do wonders but will be over the top so to speak if you don't have the overdrive to drop your gearing for the highway. If you only have a 3 speed go with a 3.08 or a 3.23. The 3.08 will drop right in with your 2 series carrier where as the 3.23 would require an adapter. You may find gears at a salvage yard but if you don't have tons of time they are not that expensive and worth the money. Also its often cheaper easier and definately more idiot proofed if you can get a whole rear drum to drum from a salvage yard MCSS. Have your salvage yard do a search for this first. Gears will far and away be the biggest bang for your acceleration buck. That said yes I would check the timeing and or a step furthar consider haveing someone who knows what they are doing setup an advance curve it on it. It may really help bring that 305 to life make it peppy & responsive to actually give you what it does have but you still need gears. You can also fabricate a dual snorkle air breather from yours and another from a salvage yard to help it inhale since the exhaust has been opened up a bit. 85CuttyBroham had some good input on this on another thread.

i have a aftermarket air filter, one of those cheap chrome ones on it right now, so there is no snorkel. I havesome headers i could throw on too. Anyone know wats the fastest and easiest way to check the ground on the sending unit??? My guage reads past full all the time now.

Well, it all depends on the Camaro it came from. The cheapest option may be to just find a G body axle with good gearing to begin with. I got one with axle code GU5 ( as called out under the trunk lid on the Service Parts Identification label) for $50-60 at a local U pull it yard. It has a 3.23 axle in it and was usually found on V6 cars intended for high altitude locations. However, it is a common enough option that it is easy to find if you look at enough 231 Buick V6 cars.
