Pedro here. Work is coming along on my 350 re-build (more on that in a build page when I get to it) but ran into a snag.... The new Dorman timing cover I purchased a while back seems to be for a smaller harmonic balancer then the one that's on the 350 I just picked up and started "refreshing" with a cam and used vortec heads. Options are either hack the timing tab off it and install the aftermarket Mr. Gasket one I picked up a while back for the tired 305 with no timing tab, get a new timing cover or go with a smaller balancer.
I'm not opposed to spending a little more money to make it look good, I'm just confused on if bigger balancer is better. From googling the topic it ranges from no difference to keep the 8". Some specs on the motor so far:
84-85 "reman" 350 out of a 2wd C20 (with mismatch heads, hence the vortec take offs)
Edelbrock 2102 cam
Edelbrock 2116 Vortec intake
Edelbrock 1405 (if I remember right) carb
Vortec heads of a 96-97 c1500 (complete take offs with ugly chipping black paint on the valve covers)
Reusing the pushrods that were in the "reman" 350 since they're still "new" but have the vortec ones if need be.
New High Volume oil pump, cause... why not
New mechanical fuel pump, cause... why not
New Cloyes timing chain that will be sitting in the box since the old crankshaft gear didn't want to come off...
Old found in the garage Accel HEI distributor that's in the tired 305 (until it moves to the new motor)
and various shiney bits that just might get painted black.
As you can see from the "Performer" Edelbrock parts, this isn't going to be a drag car but more of a lively daily driver. And most likely would fall into the ratrod category for quite a few years. Rattle can flat black is always a great color, as is primer grey. So... harmonic balancer? Yank the one off my 305 (if it's a 6.75) buy a new 6.75 (new is always better), hack a tab or replace my timing cover? And does will a larger balancer really matter in my daily driver?
