I don't think so. The balance of the crankshafts are different.

Yes it will work. But if you have any real money into the motor, I would suggest getting the proper one. They don't actually balance the engine, they help with the vibrations. So it should be fine.

sounds good to me, there's no money into this engine, it was just assembled for the time being until i round up all my parts for my 383

I BELIEVE (stand to be corrected) that any small block harmonic balancer will work with ANY small block EXCEPT for the 400. The 400 crank is externally balanced with the harmonic balancer and the rest are internally balanced. An older hotrodding trick was to get a HB from a 283 since they were so small and had less inertial mass so they could rev the engine that much faster. I just took one off a 61 chev 283 and couldn't believe how small they were.

With changes in technology over time now you'd be better off getting a fluidampr if you want more reliability. By now most of the older HB's have a degraded rubber ring between the crankshaft ring and the timing ring, and they tend to slide around and before you know it your timing has slipped (in theory), when in reality it's just a crappy HB.

Correct. They are all neutral balanced except for the 400. GM's specification for "good enough" is pretty broad on Chevrolet products.

The 260 balncer is different from a 350 as far as looks, do they function the same though??

The correct term is 'harmonic dampener' not 'harmonic balancer'. There is no balancing done with this part. It just dampens the vibration from the drive train. So they should all interchange (aside from the 400).
