I have a new heater core that I am going to install. However, it came with some foam that I am not sure is necessary. Should this foam be installed? If so, how? Wrap it around the perimeter? Or just toss it? I don't remember there being anything in there when I took the old one out...

Wrap it around. It cushions the heater core. Make sure the V shape on top isn't wrapped over for the hold down bracket.

in the aftermarket world of mis fits you use foam to stop air going around the core.a half inch gap can kill your heat when temps are in the teens.
Fortunately, I won’t have to worry about temps in the teens here on the SpaceCoast…🥳

If (and it does happen!) you get a whistle sound after the install it’s the fluid going through to fast or there is a small amount going between the two sides. ( I was never told exactly which) but there is an insert that goes in the hose like a reducer and helps eliminate the problem. Even the factory did this!
