Just buy g body replacement moog springs. G body springs had one of the highest rate springs. I put a set in the back of my malibu and gave the car a nice stiff ride in the back.
i looking to a little more highest rate springs. i was plan on goin to the junk yard.. is there some car or truck that would be better to get some off of ?
i went to chicago spring and shocks and they did me right. Moog parts all the way round suspension wise but I went with gabriel load carriers up front. They have super high rating, better than moog I promise, plus its the spring and shock together. I went with gabriel highjacker shocks in back with the loadcarrier springs again. This cutlass rides like a dam dream. stiff and sits up proper.
The better you understand something the better chance you have at making the best decision the first time & actually knowing that you did. The link Shotgun posted will educate you. Its great information and a lot less subjective than someones opinion based on whatever experience they do have.
You can copy off a neighbors paper in math class. You may or may not get the right answer and even if you do you won't know why. You can take not so much time study the material and actually get the right answer and know why its the right answer for you. The chart shows what came on the performance gbodys the spring rate, load height, etc.
Suspension is about package & use. The thing that article should include is swaybars. When upgrading, springs & swaybars and for that matter shocks should be thought of as a package. Cheapest upgrade swaybars are used factory f-41s which includes a thicker front bar & a rear bar. They can be found here & other places online as well as salvage yards for cheap. In fact I have some to sell. They came with the performance g-bodys ie GN/Ttype/442/MCSS and anything ordered with F-41. New Moog springs are so cheap it makes little sense to get used springs out of a salvage yard. For most performance oriented street use g-bodys with regular radial tires that are a decent upgrade from stock ie a little wider taller & lower profile most people prefer something like the Moog 5658s or 5660s. They are a good bit stiffer than even the factory performance spring and yet not overpowering for f-41 sway bars nor do they make a harsh ride or your car bouncy by overcoming your shocks. They have a 1/4" lower ride height than the original load ride height.
OK so say you have f-41 bars & better springs don't forget new poly end links. They are cheap, most peoples are shot, and they will make a significant improvement with no downside. You can get them at any autoparts store. Last shocks, this costs a little more to do right but not a lot and it is worth it. I recommend Edelbrock ISAs or Billensteins.
Actually I would do the end links & shocks before springs and the sway bars as soon as you can get them as they are cheap & an easy do it yourself mod. Shocks & end links are also an easy do it yourself maintenance item and upgrade. Springs are a little more involved and at minimum will need a shop for the alignment. But after endlinks, shocks, & swaybars, and good tires many people are so suprised & happy with the improvements that they put off or don't spend the money on springs & alinement depending on your pocketbook & how much better is good enough. Hope this helps.
PS Always wonder what exactly cargo coils were never seen specs on them. Sorta like 3/4 race cam back in the day. I always assumed they were just stiffer back springs like for station wagons who want to pull a trailer.
Gabriel load carriers, is that a shock or a spring? You say its stiffer than Moog.. springs? If so what Moog spring? Its all relative. Highjacker shocks & load carrier spring in the rear. I am not knocking what they did just trying to understand what you have. High & stiff does not sound good to me. It sounds like an old 3/4 ton pickup truck setup to carry a load. But I may misunderstand and it may be dramatically better than the worn out weak factory stuff. Most don't want stiff or harsh & higher they want firm & lower.
from the link it appears that a monte SS app to get springs would be a nice upgrade from just regular springs, wouldnt it?
currently i'm not looking for lowered ride height, i just want something a little stiffer. im still using regular springs front and back and i'm thinking i'd like to get something a smidge stiffer so maybe the monte SS app springs would be a good choice for me.
nice link BTW. as always that place is a fountain of knowledge.
