PLEASE HELP 85 CUTLASS SALON. SHE IS ON SIDE OF ROAD AS WE SPEAK AND SHE WANTS TO GET HOME 🙂

ok i have searched the forums but just wanting to get some info for my car. started over heating when i went on vacation on the highway. pulled over at a rest stop because temp gauge was right at the red area. opened hood and engine was steaming and in the over flow for radiator was boiling and pressurized and water was coming out of water pump pretty good. So in middle of no where i took out the thermostat to see if it would run better with out it. did not notice a change. took cap off radiator and water seemed to flow. so now iv got a new thermostat and water pump with no leaks and was trying to get it home and was running great. "would hold the temp between 1/4 mark and 1/2" then out the no where would shoot up right before red. WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE?

85 Cutlass Salon 307 "all original"
*new water pump
*new thermostat
*no leaks

Thanks
Jonathan

Possible air pocket, thermostat sticks(even new ones can be bad), Is it a mechanical fan? if so fan clutch could be bad.

Just couple thoughts

the fan runs all the time .. if i have air in it what do i need to do? should i run the car with the radiator cap off and keep pouring water in it while it circulating to get the air out.

thanks
jonathan

You keep saying water was boiling out, is there any antifreeze in your radiator/cooling system at all?

is it the factory fan? is the engine factory??
sometimes if you use factory fan on a bigger motor it won't be able to cool it.

also I had aftermarket dual fans on my cutlass and I guess it wasn't wired right because one day it started getting hot, both fans were turning, but one was overworking itself and the other was only spinning half rate.

no straight water right now. did not want to keep buying a gallon of 15 dollar anti-freeze every time i have to fill it up. before the problem started yes it did have anti-freeze in it. since i have changed the water pump and thermostat she has only had water in her also. is that a bad thing

it is all factory stock. all orignal

Straight water is not good for long term, antifreeze raises the boiling point of water so your car will run without overheating. That can lead to a cracked head or block. I would only run straight water until you know the air is out of the cooling system.

Just to clarify

1- you put in new water pump and new thermostat.
2- you filled it up with only water
3- then went forvadrivewith only water?

If there is only water in it, that's your issue, you can run water for a very brief period in an emergency. You can't go for a long drive with just water. Water boils at 212f, only 17 degrees above a 195 degree thermostat.

Also check the engine oil level, see if the oil looks milky or has light colored streaks in it at all.
