I just got back and bought a 1984 el camino rear end. Trying to figure out what the gear ratio is exactly. I have 3.73 yukon posi gears in my 80' malibu right now, but i'm stepping down on gears cause I'm going to be driving it 3 hours to college station to go to Texas A&M. Here are some of the numbers off the axle housing:

-6AZC332 (axle tube)
-22507717 (casting)
- H12 (casting)
-555017 17:41 (engraved on pinion gear)

From what I can tell, after counting the turns I believe this is a 2.41 non-limited slip. I have a sheet of all the codes from back when I tried to figure out my malibu's stock rear end. The AZ etched into the axle tubes varifies that this is a 2.41 open. I kinda wish it were a 3.08, but I have a feeling it would cost me another $50 to get the ring and pinion. Bought this rear end for $50.

Right there's your answer. 17 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring. 41 divided by 17=2.41.

There we go! lol I forgot how to do the math so instead I tried counting the turns but these open rear ends can be a pain when it comes to that. My dad tried counting and he somehow got 1 1/4 turns. I'll stash my 3.73 posi rear end on the side. I'm having to wait till the first couple of weeks of the first semester to figure out my finances. Hopefully it won't be too long after I'll get a daily driver like a civic or something. Once that happens I won't have to put the malibu through 3 hours one way to go to college.
