I gave up finding a factory tack and bought a used Autometer 5160 Pro Comp dash mounted 5 inch dia. tack. I am installing it in my 1983 Grand Prix and want to mount it where the original clock was mounted, flush behind the black faceplate not sticking out further than the speedo as we used to do in the 60s/70s with after market tack installs.

Has any Forum member ever done this install in a G body dash?

The 5 inch tack face fits perfect against the back of the black speedo/clock faceplate (under the clear plastic lense) and the black tack faceplate with white and dark yellow rpm markings match the speedo marking pretty well.

My install issue involves the best way to mount the tack in the factory dash components. The factory clock fts and mounts in a light green colored plastic mounting bracket that also holds the speedometer and idiot light cluster. The clock mounting area has plastic pedistalls sticking out of the back of the bracket to hold the clock. These pedistalls are too close together to put the Automerter tack in without to my thinking, cutting the pedistalls flush with the back of the bracket with a Dremmel tool.

Then, the tack guts will fit, but then I need to actually hold the tack in place. One thought is to epoxy glue the tack face to the back of the black faceplate which would make a solid mount. The 194 instrument light bulbs that back light the clock would I think be best removed as the tack has its own internal lighting.

Am I on the right track with this install? Any experienced feedback would be most appreciated before I start modifying my dash!

It definitely sounds like you're on the right track. Have you tried pushing, or mounting the tach thru the front side instead of considering epoxying it in? Even if you had to Dremel the opening abit. Also, as long as you don't have a protruding shift light, I can't see a problem with it. Let us know how it works out.

It sounds like your trying to do what I did to my dash. post some pics of your dash. If i remember correctly its exactly the same as mine, so what i did should work for you too...Now some pictures, because everyone loves pictures

All of my guages were put into the factory housing with VERY LITTLE modifing

I took the idiot lights out and put real gauges in

the random light bulb coming out of that dash vent my "idiot light" from my volt gauge, it is only there because the alternator needs a resistance signal so that it will charge.

If you look closely, in the upper driver vent is a shift light, you can't see it when the dash is all together, but when i hit the set RPM, its nice and bright.

I installed 5 inch Autometer tach and speedometer. I just put it in through the front and clamped it in the back like a normal aftermarket gauge. Then I put my shift light on the top of my column.

Great job, man! This is exactly what I'd like to accomplish with my GP dash.

I put a tach in my original dash but had to cut down the bezel for it to sit flush from behind, I think I glued or siliconed it in. This was long before my current dash that I made.
