I've already taken off the stock intermediate shaft and tried putting on the jeep one. The splines match up onthe box, but I can't get the other end to mate up. I know about some notch some of you guys had to cut because of a clip or something? There is nothing in the way on the other end.

Another question is I tried heating this thing up with a torch to shorten it because it is too long. After heating it, it won't slide in or out even with a hammer. It is oozing some kind of silicone out of the shaft where the small half is supposed to slide into the larger one.

I need as many pics of this mod as possible. I want to make sure I have the correct shaft. I pulled it out of an 89' Jeep Cherokee but at some point between this forum and turbobuick, there was a mixing up of what shaft you needed between the grand cherokee and a plain jeep. It was to my understanding that you get it out of a plain jeep. Any help is much appreciated.

Make sure you have the right shaft. That shaft you need can be found in all the boxy jeep cherokees. It can also be found in some of the grand cherokees... they are hit and miss, have a look before you pull, its pretty easy to tell.

For pictures of the two different shafts along with a stock g-body shaft check out page 3 in this thread:

As for freeing up the shaft I had to heat it with a torch for quite a while, maybe 5-10 mins. As it starts getting hot and oozes start hitting on it with a hammer. I hit on the shaft where it flares out, right before the u-joint.

The bubling your seeing is an internal plastic ring (two of them) that are used to keep the shaft from coming apart. You need to melt these out to free the shaft and once you do it will come apart. It goes back together so no worries, I did have to clean some of the shaft with a wire brush to get some excess "plastic" off.

i used a big bar clamp to free mine up, no heat just a lot of blaster. just squeezed it together until it compacted and then it was fine. I did sand down all the paint i could where the slip fit is.

Hope you got the right shaft. when I did mine it slid on fine, i would assume yours would do the same if you had the right shaft.

actually i just remembered i had to pry mine open a little before it went on to the column side. try that i guess

Good news gents.

Spent a little more time putting the torch on the shaft and it finally started to slide in and out lol. Other good thing is I took a flat head punch and opened up the non-splined end of the shaft and it went on with no problem. Damn glad I got the right shaft the first time.
