ok i have been around here awhile but i have a problem i havent asked for help with cause i thought i could figure it out on my own. My problem is that my car has now power. I have a hard time getting to and keeping 30-40 mph in city without it bogging down. then on the highway it doesnt want to go faster than 65 it sounds like its screaming but it dont go faster.

I did an entire tune-up minus oil-change because i wanted to do my valve cover gaskets cause they were leaking i have only gotten around to the left side. the tune-up helped a little and an open air cleaner and disconnected my air pump which helped a tiny bit and did a new cat-back exhaust with a thrush muffler. i also did the fuel filter.

this car's carb has been rebuilt twice as seen in receipts from previous owner but it stall has idle, choke problems and it runs rich. the past couple days a weird noise has been coming from the engine one guy thinks its my fuel pump which would tie in to bogging but the guy who has been helping me with the car who found i had a clogged catalytic converter says it could be the fuel pump or so much gas in the oil from the carb dumping it into the engine and that it is causing a lower end knock and that i should change my oil and add a supplement from lucas.

what do you guys think cause my plans are for an oil change tomorrow, carb on next week (i got a edelbrock 600cfm)

please help

if you have gas in your oil, start there. In fact if it's bad enough that you think its causing problems, why haven't you changed it yet???? Have you checked compression yet? Fuel pressure? And what kind of tune up did you do? Did you check/change fuel filter(s)???? Maybe a start for ya. Let us know and good luck.

i didnt think about gas in the oil my buddy did and i am correcting that today. i did spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and an edelbrock air cleaner for tune-up. and i do not own a fuel pressure gauge or compression gauge but i could probably use them in shop class tomorrow.

sounds like you have a plugged converter... or a badly missing ignition system.. if its getting fuel.. you shouldnt be having that much trouble!!

Chech for vac. leaks. Spray wd-40 or starting fluid on the vac. lines, around carb base, etc. If the rpms go up, you've found your leak. Since you say it's running rich, replace your O2 sensor. If it's bad, carb will go into open loop mode and it'll run rich. You still on the computer?

If you have a computer controlled carb u should have an o2 sensor. Do you have any plugs or wires on the front, and on top of your carb? Does your distributor have a vacuum advance on it? Also gas iin your oil is 99% the fuel pump is bad and leaking into the crank case. Your carb shouldn't be dumping that much fuel into the engine that it would be filling the oil with gas, you'd probably hydro lock the motor first. Also you say it sounds like its screaming when you drive it what rpm are you at? Could be a bad transmission.

ok great thing happened today my teacher took my car for a test drive. we checked the crossover pipe and heat-riser for restrictions there was none. he is like have you done your timing, me no. we throw a light on it 4 degrees retarded about 14 degrees from where it should be. no i can do 60mph easy and i can do brake-stand burnouts and break it loose in corners i love my car now its got balls. but the noise thats kind of like a knock is still there and the carb is still garbage.
