Hey everyone, this is my first post and I'm in need of major help. My 84 Cutlass (3.8L) has been parked about 5 years or so, I was makin babies/reinforcing the frame during that time. Anyways, now I can't get it to start. Put in new fuel, changed all fluids.

At first I wasn't getting gas, so I put on a rebuilt carb, now has gas.

Checked the plugs and I have spark as well.

Then engine is turning but not smooth at all and it won't fire.

Have a vid to somewhat help with what I mean:

Any ideas, as I'm fresh out.

Oh also to add, I'm pretty dang mechanically retarded, which doesn't help. LOL

Engines need air, fuel, and spark

Let's assume you're getting air!

Are you sure its getting fuel?
Can you smell fuel?
Did you flush the old gas from the fuel line?
Did you try dribbling a little gas down the throat of the carb while cranking?

Did you remove the distributor?
Is the firing order correct? wires?
Spark plugs?
Is is popping and seem like it is trying to start?

Looks like you are jump starting it, and it is turning over too slow. Put a known good battery in it and clean the terminals.
If it were me, after 5 years I would put a tiny bit of oil down each spark plug hole.

Every bit of information you can give us helps.

Yes it is getting fuel
I am able to smell it
Flushed out all the old gas
Tried gas in the carb, no start

I rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel pump to electric, changed the plugs and wires, double checked the order and still nothing.

I've been told to check the ignition control module, so that's what I'm doing next.

I'm not jumping it in the video, but using the battery from the van because it's the same type/size.

under no circumstances dat car will start wid that battery.. the sh*t barely turning the motor over bro... grab a good battery , check for sparks, gas and compression and you good to go..
war

You could turn that thing faster by hand

Hopefully that new battery fixes you all up

X2

put on a new starter and battery, and nothing. Now it turns over more smoothly/constant but still no start. Any other ideas?

Change the fuel filter, it may be getting fuel, however not enough to start it.....I would also change the cap/rotar...You may not be getting enough spark/fuel. Also make sure the timing is on, and not to insult you, make sure you put the plug wires back on correctly....good luck 8)
