HELP! Where to look up axle codes?

I pulled an 8.5" rear end out of an Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser (wagon) and was wondering what the codes on it mean..... Center housing has casting #'s GM 49 and 1251603. The axle tube stamp is 4XS G4054. Anyone know what it is or where I can look it up? The stamped code seems to b different than any other I can find.....

Lots of places, but no mention anywhere of a 4XS code.

I think it might be 4YS, can't find that code either. Anyway of finding the RPO from the cutlass wagon it's from?

wagon is long gone to the wrecker's..... the axle was the only thing I could save before it was crushed....

That code doesn't turn up anything for me but in the end it doesn't really matter. Those codes aren't really going to tell you anything usefull anyway. I mean, do you really care what shift it was made on? AFAIK, those codes don't tell you the gear ratio which is the only usefull thing you might want to know, but you can get that info other ways. As long as you know it's from a B-Body, then you know it'll bolt right into another B-Body.
