I pulled an 8.5" rear end out of an Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser (wagon) and was wondering what the codes on it mean..... Center housing has casting #'s GM 49 and 1251603. The axle tube stamp is 4XS G4054. Anyone know what it is or where I can look it up? The stamped code seems to b different than any other I can find..... :blam:

pic of the axle code.... maybe someone else can figure it out....

That code doesn't turn up anything for me but in the end it doesn't really matter. Those codes aren't really going to tell you anything usefull anyway. I mean, do you really care what shift it was made on? AFAIK, those codes don't tell you the gear ratio which is the only usefull thing you might want to know, but you can get that info other ways. As long as you know it's from a B-Body, then you know it'll bolt right into another B-Body.
