like the title says need help with a belt question, i just picked up a 83 regal, 305 4 barrel, drove it home on the highway 45 mins and was just getting home, fan belt/alternator came off, dident notice it did, i heard a "clunk"sound but dident think much of it, until the volts light came on, then the temp right after and she heated up pretty good, was pissin coolant when i got it home after 5 more minutes, anyways i put the belt back on , let it cool down and took it for a spin again, got to highway speed, used passing gear, bam came off again..same thing heated up, ect ect. why is it doing this?is the belt garbage? or what and could i have damage the motor driving it for that little and it heating up? thanks

If it has been thrown once, it is garbage. However, I would also check the pulley alignment, and check the accessory bearings for tightness. Another thing to look at is the condition of the brackets. They can crack over time, or may be missing one or more bolts. You never know what someone has done just to sell off an old car, so give it a thorough once over.

if you have a v-pulley system you can get a ribbed set off of a later model monte, you'll have to change the alt pulley this system is real hard to throw and like 85 brougham said check all your brackets and pully's , a water thats going bad or a cracked pully or bad alt might cause the belt to come off.. and a word to the wise ...if you keep over heating your motor your going to turn a little problem into a big problem imho....jesse

got a new belt for it today, got her on nicely and took it for a spin, did the same passing gear a few times, and no problems now, i guess the belt was completly shot
Just to be on the safe side I would check your brackets and pully alignment. I had the same issue. Also if you have removed your AC and deleted the bracket for that it will cause unnecessary flex and you will loose the belt at freeway speeds. The good news is you know what to look for and you can usually feel it let go. I'd keep an eye on your gauges incase it happens again.

oh yeah man, i keep a very close eye on it, i drive 45 minuetes into town tow work, so i got pretty paranoid yesterday haha..but she seems to be doing fine as it could be, i did go over the brackets/pulleys and couldent see anything wrong/missing so i should be in the good for now, although i keep thinking im hearing a "ticking" or knocking sound now that i dident hear before it heate dup real good

Hearing noises is just par for the course. Glad to hear it held on. But ususally the belt will let loose when the RPM's are higher, just an FYI.
