HELP with turn signal

Whenever I use the turn indicator when turning left or right, the hazard lights flash instead of the turn signal. This begun a couple of days ago. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The car is a 86 El Camino

My guess would be something had broken off the signal/hazard switch it self. When u turn left its shorting out with the hazard's. Remove the wheel, the ring and the plate and see what u have. Thats where I would be going first.

I was hoping it was something a little simpler. I plan on looking more in to it this weekend.

Well if ya wernt planing on getting into the column, try to find another steering column. If its not the right color just grab a bomb of the closest color match. Another plus is if ya currently do not have tilt this is the time to get it. If ya do go that route when everything is done then ya take apart the old one and see how she all works.
