I have a 86 chevy 305 an 350 transmission in my 83 cutlass. I'm having trouble with my edelbrok 600 carburetor spitting gas out of top of carb an hesitates on take off. What could be the problem.

Generally backfire through carb is going to be valve adjustment or timing way out of whack. Hesitation will be up there on list of symptoms for either of these problems. Can you be a bit more specific on any changes or mods done recently. Usually that is the first place to start. Check your timing first before messing with carb - although if it has been messed with at all this could complicate your situation.
