well its only rated at 290hp. you could probably buid one with more power for the same money. i'd probably start with a junkyard engine. throw in a good rotating assembly, vortec heads, a compcams 262 cam, intake and carb. you should be able to pull abot 350-400hp.
you could do a 383 since they cost about the same.
i'd look for a 1pc rear main seal that came equipped with a roller cam--i don't know the years but i'm sure someone here does.

repost

i thought about a stroker, but how reliable is it for street and highway driving? if i add performance manifold, headers, carb, duel exhaust and distri to the goodwrench engine will it kick out 350hp?

That isn't a horrible deal, but as he said, you could have one built and get more power out of it for that price. But with that engine there, you could eventually throw a different cam and better heads on it and get a lot more power. Plus with that engine you will have the GM warranty

You would probably be better off building your own engine. That engine was probably built with edelbrock performer intake and carb in mind so im sure that HP rating is with that combo anyway. Compression is pretty low and the heads have large combustion chambers. To really bring out life in it you would need a bigger cam which would probably require more compression. You only get that if you get rid of the heads or put different pistons in it. So you would be tearing it down again. Might as well just build your own and do it right the first time.

a 383 stroker is perfectly reliable. i built mine with reliability in mind, thats why the numbers are kind of mild.
that engine rating was probably with a good carb, intake and possibly headers. they always give the beast possible rating.

Summit Racing has Blueprint short blocks that are very reasonable. You can get a 355 cid for $1300 or 383 for $1800. You throw some vortec heads on top and you have a real power house for under $3000!!!

wow good to know. I saw Ebay crap for that price but Ebay motor is like a mail order bride. You don't know what you have until you are stuck with it.

A decent cam can also change the economy and power pretty easy. Short block is the way to go if you don't want to build it yourself
