I was at a big car show last night, and my buddy was telling me about this kid that had a couple 80's montes... Turns out he was there and we got to talking and he has a 7.5" 3.73 in one he is parting out. I asked him if it was for sale, he said yeah, he wants $250 for it.
Is that a good price?? Seems like a little much to me... How much would you guys pay for a 7.5 3.73??

to me a 7.5 rear is worth $50.00 ..........they wont last at all with any real power not worth putting any money into it save your money towards something better , 8.5 rear , 12 bolt, ford 9 ....these are a few worth putting money into
if you have a 7.5 rear now and have to change it out i would save up for something better.....anything is better than a 7.5,in the long run you will save money from repairs lol
If it is a posi, that is not a bad price. However, that low a gear will tend to be weak in a 7.5. If your car is mainly used on the street, it will survive ( you have a mild Olds 350, right?) just fine. However, you may find that it is too much of a good thing. Most milder engines produce lots of low RPM torque, and using that multiplier may exceed the ability of your tires to control it. It also will rev up pretty fast. I built a Camaro with a 3.73/5 speed and a 406 a number of years ago. The 3.73's made 1st pretty much useless and the guy who owned it used to start off in second. He later switched to a 3.27 (Australian 9 bolt) gear and found it much more drivable, and quicker too. Plus, if you don't have an overdrive, the drone of the engine at speed will drive you nuts-not to mention the fuel economy. I run a 3.23 in my car with a mild Chevy 350 and a TH 200 4R and find it to be a good balance. Even still it is a bit hairy to drive it in the rain.
That is a good price if it is a posi, if it is an open rear walk away from it. I just sold a posi 3.73 rear for $300. Since you likely have 2.XX gears now, with 3.73 gears you will see a noticeable difference.
I think that is a reasonable price, if it is a posi in decent shape, more so if it was properly assembled with aftermarket parts.
I run 3.73's and a TH350 and I have no complaints, but my car is driven for fun. Lots of highway driving with that combo would make me want to install an overdrive transmission.
Depends on your car. If you run slick on the thin and/or have a stick, you might want to hold out for a better rear. But if your running street tires there should be no problem with a 7.5, and you will like the 3.73s too.
As for value, if it is in good shape it's a good deal. In the last year I have spent over $2000 on my 7.5 (adding 3.73s, posi, new axles, new bearings, and a support cover). So $250 sounds like a pretty good deal. As long as it's in good shape and the posi isn't worn out.
