How to adjust timing with a vacuum-less distributor?

When checking the timing I'd normally have to plug the vacuum port, but the distributor on my 87 Cutlass is vacuum-less. Instead, there's electrical wires attached to it. Do I need to detach these to set the timing correctly?
 
I believe it has to be detached to set base timing.
