I bought a gasket and seal kit for my 78 Salons Saginaw 4 speed. I took the bolts off the tail shaft and it comes out about an 1/8 or 1/4 inch but not coming off. I looked at a blow up diagram. In the parts diagram I see a clip but can't find it on my trans. I researched a bit but nothing telling or showing the location and how to removal of the clip. Anyone got experience in these? Ok, what's the trick? Anybody know how to remove the tailshaft from a saginaw 4 speed? Frigging manual is no where to be found on the net.

Speedo gear is out, I've removed the shifter assembly, and the 5 bolts where it meets the transmission are out. No problem. There must be some kind of c clip or something around the tailshaft at the end though. It'll move around 1/2" or so but not slide out. I'm sure there's a bearing in there, but I can't see what's stopping the housing from sliding off...

Anyway, just thought I'd ask folks better than me at this stuff

Help?

PS: If anyone has a link to the rebuild manual... I'd be insanely grateful.

You will need flat blade retainer ring plyers to remove the retaining ring on the rear bearing. It is exposed at the rear of the main housing through the side cover opening.

Actually you can't remove the snap ring but you release the rear bearing when you expand it.

Ah- so not on the tail housing, but on the transmission casing side? ie: where the shifter arms are?

Aghaga, thank you VERY much for your help. Slid my c-clippers in there and released the c clip and that tailhousing came right off no probems.

For anyone out there in the future that's searching on this one:

(1) Drain Fluid

(2) Remove the bolts holding the tailshaft housing in place.

(3) Remove the sidecover, exposing the gears

(4) Turn the tailhousing so the bottom is facing the open side cover. You should be able to see the c-clip in question. Use a c-clip tool to expand the c-clip. With the clip expanded (even slightly) the tailshaft housing should slide right out.
