I got her running! But the timing is outta wack cuz i messed with it in my attempts to fix her. I cant find any marks on my balancer so is there another accurate way to time it?

They sell stickers that go on your balancer with a nice range of degrees on them. Just get your motor to TDC and line up the 0 on the sticker with your timing tab.

i have some sticker at the house they rang from 7" - 8" balancer minus the 7.25 i used, i'll mail em to you

Get a buddy to sit in the car (running in gear). Have him hold the brake and give it some gas (not spinning the tires), Advance the timing untill you hear it knocking, then back it off a bit untill the knocking is gone.

The timing degree tape works very well. I believe it's a Mr. Gasket product.
It works well if you own a non-adjustable timing light.

The other option would be to invest in a good adjustable degree timing light.

Go to the auto parts store and get some timing tape. Disconnect the battery. Pull the number one plug out of the motor. Take an old plug and bust out the ceramic and center electrode. Put a long bolt through it, it cannot move, thread it, JB weld it, mighty putty it or something but make sure the bolt stays put. This is now your own home made piston stop. Thread it in all the way, if it hits the piston, rotate the engine by hand until you can thread it in all the way. Now rotate the motor clockwise until it stops. Mark the spot on the ballancer that the pointer is pointing at. Now spin the motor counter clockwise until it stops again, now mark this spot where the pointer is on. Measure between the two points and then put a mark in the exact middle between these points. Now that is TDC, put your timing tape on so that this point is 0.
Pull out your piston stop and put your plug back in.
Now, this is CRITICAL! Ignore what these other guys told you.

Oh, one more thing, if you find the timing starts acting up then recheck TDC or 0 degrees on the ballancer. IF it is no longer pointed at 0, then the elastomer on your harmonic balancer is failing and you need a new harmonic balancer. If you can't see the markings on your balancer to start with, you should probably consider a new one anyway.

I can post tomorrow, they pics are on my shop computer.

I made a TDC finder using a old spark plug and a bolt similar to what 89nighthawk suggests. I ran a tap down the middle and made it adjustible.

Use it to find TDC. You can mark the balancer if you have a dial back or electronic timing light.

Worse comes to worse, divide the diameter by 360 and mark from there.
