I've got a 78 and will need new tires very soon. They currently have 205 70 15 all the way around. It's on (I believe) 8 inch wide wheels. I wanted to stagger the tires and would like to see how wide I can go. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Many factors here but I run 15x8 w/ 4.25" bs. 255/60/15 fit perfectly and look good. I also run 275/60/15 drag radials on the same wheels with aluminum drums and a fender lip roll. Just enough room but nothing to spare. The aluminum drums have a thicker flange and get the tires away from the frame some more. All these cars are different with their rear wheel well opening size so ymmv
Thanks for both of the responses. I was thinking of going to a 205 60 on the front and maybe something like a 235 55 on the back. Nothing to radical as I'd like to either put a set of either 15 inch rallys, 16 inch stock irocs or the 18 inch aftermarket irocs. Thinking of also possibly lowering it a little to get a nice stance. Was contemplating the "pro touring" look for her as well.
215/65/15 (26" tall iirc) front on 15x8 rally wheels, 255/60/15 (27" tall iirc) on 15x8 vette rally wheels. Car is lowered with hotchkis springs
Thanks for the info. I like the thought of that 255 on the back. I need to research the wheels that came on the car. The wheels don't look bad...but I know that I'm gonna want something different.
