ok first off i got a 1982 SS el camino im not sure what the was included in the SS package but it has all the emissions and A/C. i was wondering if the car would run fine if the A/C and the emissions were taken off. also some things in my car dont work such as the HVAC, speedometer, dash lights and i tried checking the fuses but the writing is gone so i dont know what one is which or what fuse to put in it can any body help me on this also the choke light stays on along with the volt light ( i dont have any gauges except the fuel, temp, speedometer, and the clock(which works) ive tried to find out why this is but have came up with nothing. if anybody could help me that would be great also if anybody has pictures of the fuse block with the writing on it that would be great thanks

removing the emission system would be illegal, however if the car is for offroad use only you're ok 🙂 if you have the feedback carb (e4me) things are a little trickier. best thing to do would be to get a new carb, q-jet, holley whatever. the speedometer is mechanical, to diagnose it you need to pull the gauges out, disconnect the speedo and, watching the inner speedo cable, move the car. if the cable spins you probably need a new gauge. if it doesn't spin you have to unscrew it from the trans and see if it spins on that side. you can put the rear on jackstands and spin the tires, if the speedo output on the trans doesn't spin, the gear is broken.
i highly recommend that you get the repair manual for your car. it should have the fuse and wiring diagrams.
the ss generally (i don't know what years had what) had the 305ci engine (H.O. was also available), stiffer springs, bigger front and rear sway bars, 15in rims, 3.73 posi rear, chassis/frame/body? braces, a higher shifting trans, rear lip spoiler (some years) and a different nose.

the car came from california and is now in oregon but we dont have emission laws here 😉 it does have the 305 ive also looked and cant find a manual for it at all just ones for trucks;( thanks for the help

The speedometer is probably a snapped cable as G bodies did not use electronic speedometers (maybe digital Regals did, but not to my knowledge). The choke light is probably due to a bad oil pressure sender, but I don't have my FSM on me right now so I am not sure. As for the HVAC, what does not work? If the fan blows only in high mode, the resistor is bad. If not at all, the relay or motor or switch is bad, or the brown wire is disconnected from the harness. I would venture to guess that someone disassembled the dash before and failed to properly reconnect things and that is why you are missing so many functions.

look on ebay for a haynes manual. they ain't the greatest but they ain't bad.

As far as pulling off the emissions I'd leave it unless your going to remove it all. You'll have to crimp or plug the EGR rail on the exhaust manifolds which can be a real hassle. Pulling all of the smog off of your 305 wont open up a whole lot of power, I did it on mine and it didnt make much of a difference. But if your going to get into all of this I'd invest in some type of manual, or at least a wiring diagram. It'll pay for it's self if your doing all of the electrical work.

i took out the speedo cable on the transmission end and tried rolling the wheels and the internal part in the transmission didnt move how would i go about replaceing it or just fixing it? also i noticed that the cruise dont work and the wiper wash wont spray it makes a clicking sound but nothing comes out. what part of the dash is that brown wire at behind the dash? at first the fan worked but not on high and and the it would stop blowing when turned to a/c 🙁

i am assuming that the trans is a 200-r4. if so the speedo driven gear is simple, you loosen up the 10mm bolt next to the steel sleeve (that the cable screws onto), then carefully pull out the sleeve by hand. the gear should come with it. the drive gear is harder. first drop the pan, then towards the rear of the trans is the governor assembly. remove the bolts holding in the governor and pull it out. the gear should pop off pretty easily. if you are going to replace the plastic clip under the gear be very carefull! the clip is held in (along with the weights and springs) by a cross pin. it is very easy to let the weights slip!!!!!! this result in 2 small check balls and 2 springs going god only knows where. i had to guess which way the springs went on mine. assemble in reverse order. just double check the trans output before you go through this. it doesn't turn quicky.

thnaks for the speedo help im going to double check every thing so im sure that thats what has to be done also is this causing my cruise control from working im not sure on how it works but its just a thought. thanks

the speedo cable connects to the cruise module. that will cause problems.
