I recently (this weekend) swapped a 455 with a 700r4 into my cutlass. I am having troubles getting it running. I have everything hooked up like it was with the 3.8. Its hard cranking, i know the engine is 10.5:1, with J heads, aluminum intake. Im wondering if it could be my battery or if its possibly since it always stops at compression if its a ignition issue. It ran last thursday when i pulled it outta the truck it was in.

I never had the distributor out. just had the cap off, so tommarow i'll go over my plug wires.

thats a place to start have you got a good ground to your battery and to the body

An original battery for a 3.8 would probably have a hard time cranking a 455 with that compression. Check the grounds, but also try a charger on the battery to give you extra cranking power and see if htat does it.

a motor with that must compression needs alot of timing intial timing to start and run have u tried lockin out ur timing to 35 degrees and having a kill switch to the hei so wen u want to crank motor hit switch kill spark then while its cranking fast hit the switch for spark and motor should fire rite up and check grounds and etc
