I have a 78 Malibu and wanted to upgrade to the jeep steering shaft. From what I have heard they won't work with the 78 because the top of the Malibu steering shaft has splines. Can anyone confirm this or will the jeep shaft fit the same as later model G-Bodies?

No, The jeep shaft will not fit a 78 due to the splined steering column. 79-88 columns have the smooth D shaped column ends.

Is the only way to switch out the splines to switch the whole steering colum? If that is my only option is it possible to repair and torn boot on the 78 shaft with out replacing the whole thing? I was also in the market for a later model monte SS close ratio steering box will that thread on the bottom of the 78 steering shaft or is the bottom different as well?

It is not as cheap a route as putting the jeep shaft in but if you can provide the sizes of the splines on the column and the steering box, flaming river sells the u joints and a collapsible shaft that so you can build your own. I talked to them about this a few years ago for a project of mine. Send them an email; http://www.flamingriver.com/ you can also try borgeson; http://www.borgeson.com/. Either one should be able to help you get setup with a steering shaft.
