My other g bodies were stolen, but that won't keep me down!!! I'm from Hou. Tex. I have an 84 regal with a sunroof and needs alot of work. A lot of you guys have really nice cars. I will post some pics A.S.A.P. My first 2 were Lowriders, but this one is gonna be performance!!! Peace!!!
The gbody has been at or near the top of the list across the country for cars most stolen for years. Why because the cash payin hoodsters want them and they are very easy to steel. Their may be bigger profits in selling a hot high end Porche but the market is smaller and riskier. Most of the hoodsters don't even care that it was stolen its gonna be pimped anyway. I had a clean 88 Cutlass stolen out of a buzy office parking lot in the middle of the afternoon about 5 years ago. A quiet & discrete slim jim gets you in quick or a coat hanger and a little practice. A short prybar quickly and easily breaks the cast potmetal type collar on the steering column then you grab your flathead screwdriver and pull the starter mechanism up like turning the key would and your driveing off in less than 2 minutes.
I like at least a brightly collared steel clamshell that does not require removal to use your ignition key. Its simple largely effective and practical for use. The theif sees it before they would have attempted to break in your car and generally moves on to another gbody. That said if you have a nice higher dollar GN or something you may want additional devices and measures. When I say measurers I mean things like keeping it where a tow truck can't get to it. Oh yea thievs drive tow trucks to they don't have to drive it off. Todays tow trucks can quickly get cars out of corners etc with little wheel dollys and one man automatic hydraulic powered operations.
The detective I talked to about it at that time was telling me of a flatbed tow truck that they confiscated that had a box on it. Most cities have at least one higher end larger volume ring if you will. Most of the time they have minors doing the slim jim thing no big central chop shop and a cash buyer waiting. They got savage yard vins & columns maybe swap wheels and from theft to new owner can be a couple hours. Sometimes they get an in and out in two days maaco paint. Ever cruise a bad neighborhood and commonly see gbodys without trunk locks and if you look even peeled columns.
Understanding this and a little luck is why I have owned my GN since Nov of 86. It does not go places where I have to leave it unattended or unsecured for long. It comes home with me at night and goes in the garage. The garage door generally stays shut and I don't live in a bad neighborhood. This is in part why I have the 442 as they won't normally go to great lengths to get it, its more replaceable, and they won't normally know that it and mine in particular is special and more valuable like the GN.
I had an 84 Cutlass Supreme, with bubble light clip, bucket seats, floor shifter, t tops, 13 in center gold Daytons, Candy blue paint with a white vynil 1/2 top. The 2nd one was an 84 Buick Regal with the bubble corner light clip, bucket seats, floor shifter, 3 pump set up, chrome knock-offs. what the thieves did was tag the v.i.n and painted it. I never recovered them. I'm only pretty sure it was someone I was acquainted with. That being the reason this one won't be a lo-lo, but a daily driver sittin low. This one will have an alarm and as much security as I can provide for it. Dayton, Tampa Bay, & San Antonio, thanks for stoppin by!!!
