Well I just bought my 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme a couple of days ago for $600. Very excited to finally have a car that not only is a classic, but is made the same year I was born, and has so much potential to be anything I want. Will probably be picking everyone's brains for help and tech support since this will be my first Oldsmobile ever. I haven't even worked on an Olds motor before either. Buick, and Chevys but never an Olds. And yes I plan on keeping the car Olds from front to back. Nothing Chevy, Buick, or Pontiac.
My basic plans for the car are an Olds 350, *ss end pushed up a bit to get that mean stance, 245-60r15 in the front and 275-60r15s in the rear at first then eventually move up to 295's. Looking to build just a mean cruiser. Later when my boys get older we will gut it and build a drag car but for now, I just want a badass cruiser that can walk the walk when a local high school ******** pulls up in his AWD ricer. 350 will basically have a small cam upgrade, headers, intake, bigger carb, as far as performance. Shift kit. And probably repaint it silver in the next couple of years. Excited to be a part of your guy's community and hope to make some new friends while building a beautiful Cutlass!!!

Welcome to the forum. Looks like a good car to start with.

The power is in the heads. Procomp aluminum heads milled to your desired quench / compression for say pump premium & a cam to take advantage of it will make good power. It will still take gears & a converter to get it to the ground & make it quick. A professional upgrade rebuild of the transmission will be in order. Extremeautomatics the company I had good luck with on two 200-4r rebuilds can ship you one with warranty for about $1400. Some can do the quality you will want for a little less but I would recommend only a shop that has a track record of sucess in building high performance use 200-4rs.

If you cheap out and use an old three speed you can do a nice cruiser or fast drag type car but cannot do both nearly as we'll. The OD allows you to use a lock up converter high stall for quick out of hole launches but without the slip for heat & bad mileage / driveability when cruising. It also allows for best acceleration gears like 3.73, 4.10s etc yet still cruise the interstate etc at reasonable rpms etc. if you are changing gears anyway you can upgrade the axels to 28 spline & posi unit with a support cover & cost effectively make your existing 7.5 /7.625 rear strong enough for say at least a mid 12 car. Beyond that you might look at 8.5s or ford 9s. I say build it to drive. Trailer queens for show or drag racing get old. Above all have fun.
