THE STANDARD CAST ALUMINUM OIL FILTER HOUSING FOR PONTIACS CONTAINS A BYPASS SPRING AND DISC WHICH ALLOWS OIL TO CONTINUE TO CIRCULATE THROUGH THE ENGINE IF THE FILTER GETS CLOGGED .THIS CAN BE A PROBLEM AT HIGH RPM BECAUSE THE BYPRASS USUALLY OPENS ,ALLOWING UNFILTERED OIL TO PASS INTO THE SYSTTEM.IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE WITH CLEAN OIL, YOU MUST TAP AND PLUG THE BYPASS ON ENGINES WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO OVER 4000 RPM USE. YOU MUST ALSO RUN A 2 STAGE OIL FILTER, BECAUSE A NEW SINGLE STAG FILTER CANNOT PASS ENOUGH OIL TO HANDLE THE FLOW AT HIGH ENGINE SPEEDS. A 2 STAG UNIT CATCHES THE DAMAGING PARTICLES UNDER ALL RPM RANGES. YOU CAN USE A LEE MAXI-FILTER.
Very cool and thanks for the info. I did not know this and I have liked Pontiacs for years. In fact you might put this in your signature line and or in your photos section with some pics of your Pontiac powered ride. 8) I am sure this way it would be seen more appreciated by some and helpful to many. Probably well know to the high performance Pontiac engine builder/vendor but not to the average enthusiast building his first hotted up Pontiac powered ride. 8 posts welcome aboard.
