Hi can somebody please tell me if a Chevy dealership can make you a key for a 1979 MC with your vin number?

I doubt it . Just call a locksmith. 50$ in my area. Or buy a replacement switch 15$ , if you know how to install it. Not too dificult.

Most dealerships only keep records like that for 10 yrs back or so.

dealers can look up codes by vin only as far back as 1989 or so, some of the corvettes go back further. What you can do, remove your lock cylinder, sometimes gm stamped the key code on the case. If the code is there take the code to the dealer and they can cut you a key off that. I did this on a 68 chevelle and it worked, so the machines still recognize the old codes.

X2. I've done this many times. If you need both keys, take the door and ignition lock cylinders. The best part is that the key will be punched, not cut on a key machine, so it will be the correct shape of a brand new key, not a worn one. Bring the lock cylinder, not just the code, to ensure the correct blank is used.
