Ok so i have a 79 elcamino with the 3.3 liter 200ci 6cylinder and its making one heck of a noise. A lot of times in the morning when i go out and fire it up it clacks almost like a rod knock, give it gas the noise speeds up but almost sounds like a dieseling clack. After you get going down the road the noise stops and its smooth sailing. If you slow down and you get a load on the engine (under 10-20mph or at a stoplight) the noise sometimes returnes. It gets worse when the ac is on. oil pressure is holding good and its not getting hot or any of the sort. It has new plugs, cap, rotor, and coil just as a tune up when it started. Hard to tell where its coming from but it does sound like its coming from under the car when its running but im not sure. All i have to do to get it to do it is start it and throw the ac on and put it in gear and the noise starts, even sometime with the ac off and just in gear. No noise when the car is just idling in park. Let me know what you guys think, im not really sure at this point

The first thing I'd check is the flex plate, it's probably cracked...

You could also try removing the belts one by one to see if that stops it incase the noise is coming from the front of the engine...

Is there any proper way of going about checking the flexplate? Ive had cracked/busted ones before but they were more explosive. Id guess if it would be making that much noise the crack would be obvious. Ill try the belts as soon as i get home. Thanks blake

Pull the inspection cover off and look around. Roll the motor over so you can see the whole thing thoroughly.
You could even try unbolting the torque converter and sliding it back away from the flex plate. Start the engine and see if the noise is still present.

Got up under the car last night and looked and two of the three bolts that hold the flywheel to the torque convertor had backed off. So i tightened everything and easy peasy lemon squeasy no noise
