Okay guys.... I have a 1985 cutlass with a 307 in it & I hear the noise on the passenger side when my car is idling but it goes away when i press the accelerator. The car starts/drives fine. What could this be. What should I check?

Well i have some good news and bad news, First for the bad; if you hear the knocking it could be anything from poor oiling at idle, a bad lifter(s) or your exhaust manifold could be a little loose, the good news is if you have oil pressure then you should not have any spun bearings then it would knock all the time, so i would adjust the valve train, and tighten up all my exhaust bolts and see if that corrects the problem. also depending on how many miles you have on the motor it might be time for a rebuild. to sum it all up if its a problem other than the exhaust i woulf save up for a rebuild kit to solve the issue.

If you have headers, check to make sure it isn't resting on the edge of the lower control arm. That made my a knocking noise until it heated up.

Are you talking about from the engine compartment or when you are sitting in the car?

If from the engine compartment, it could very well be a piston going or something to that effect. I had one in my 83 grand prix years ago when I had it. It only started off small and got worse over time. At the end the car sounded like Christine, then the connecting rod went threw the oil pan,,,,engine done, lol.

Mine started and drove fine but it broke off from the piston side and eventually worked its way out from the cylinder.

other things it could be is exhaust popping which could me mistaken for a knock or loose exhaust. Check the trans mounts, check the torque converter bolts.

That is about all I can think of but I am going with something in the engine.
