at least i still have a piece left. lol

It was the alt. wire that melted first, causing this melted, crusty mishap.

We had just got the q-jet on and running last night and i was gonna take it for the first real drive after i got gas. I noticed the smoke pouring from under the hood as soon as i stopped at the pump, i guess it could've been worse! I was glad i had the fire extinguisher even though i didn't have to use it. Going to pick up a new harness tomorrow, hopefully it all goes well. Not the favorite thing i've had happen on my birthday :blam:

yea happy b day. I use those black condoms for every single wire under hood to prevent melting and water getting on them. Safe to say, after the engine swap i have hundreds of the damn things layin around.

thanks for the b-day wishes!

i bought the summit kit and it came with all sizees of the loom shtuff, cant beat it for like $15. looks like i'm gonna buy another kit too.

Another thing to keep in mind is to disconnect the battery when removing a steel fuel line from the mechanical fuel pump. When it arcs off the back of the alternator and catches your fuel pump on fire it is pretty scary.

FYI - 2 cans of Coke Zero will not put it out

Thats good to know! i was gonna take my fire extinguisher out and keep a few cans of coke zero under the seat, but now i think ill keep the extinguisher.

reminds me of one night at work... some bark was smoldering from someone tossing a cig. outside and for some reason the glass cleaner didn't put it out... maybe i shoulda used the antibacterial spray.

Hey, the Coke Zero was the only liquid within reach :blam:

i believe autozone sells the condom kits in the accessory isle for cheap.

Btw my heat crossover happens to get hot also, actually to the point of turning that part of the intake bronze colored.

i'll be stealing my Fire extinguisher from my garage if i ever happen to take my cutlass more than 10 miles away from home. I just hope its the right class extinguisher in case its actually a fuel fire.

This has happenned to me twice on my first 84 GP:

1. I left the starter wire touching the exhaust manifold and on my way to work one night on the highway, it melted through and all the power to the car was instantly cut (no lights, nothing). Luckily I coasted to a stop, on a entrance ramp mind you and came back next day with a new wire, jacked up the car, got under and fixed it (in hindsight, not the safest thing to do).

2. The second time was done by these idiotsat the "highly acclaimed" API Transmissions in Mississauga on Dixie Road. I left my GP there for service and came back the next day to find these ****ing GOONS doing donuts in their parking lot with my car. *ssh*les!! I paid for my service and drove away only to find my engine smoking to death! I pulled over and found my battery on FIRE! No fire extinguisher, nothing. I did get the fire out with a rag. Of course, the IDIOTS at API RACING didnt' take any accountability. They cost me a lot of money.

Now, I always carry a fire extinguisher in my g-body.

Oh and happy birthday bro! Lol.

I get most of my split loom from www.partsexpress.com. A lot less expensive than Summit.

http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/se ... N=43228834

But they don't have the selection of other little tid bits and it doesn't look like they have 3/8" any longer. But the 1/4" size is only $0.14/ft and the 1/2" is $0.19/ft.
