I hear alot of bad stuff about the 7.5 rear end,but im not so sure.I have a 86 monte carlo with the factory 7.5 posi i added 4:10 gears that is the only change.I have owned it for 3 years 2 of them with 420 hp to the wheel cutting 1.55 to 1.65 60 ft times on slicks. What kind of luck or bad luck have some you guys have had with them? For me i will run it till i break it just hope its not on the top end when it goes.

I think they get a bad rep... ran it all summer behind my 350 last year with a 3-speed Saginaw without issues, planning on putting in a posi for this summer. Still stock, hasn't been rebuilt, but when the time comes for a full rebuild I'm putting in something like a TrueTrac with 28-spline axles.

Take a look here...

when it does go i may do something simular to your idea or maybe an 8.8 rear their dime a dozen.

If I wanted to keep the rear in my 1982 Regal, what would I need to buy so I have posi and 3.55 gears?

i agree. they are stronger than what people think. ive cut alot of 1.4 60fts with the 7.5 in my old camaro. with the best being a 1.43.

You could just get a 26-spline carrier and new gears, or you could upgrade to a 28-spline unit, but that would involve new axles as well... probably not a bad idea anyway if you plan on making power.

I am pushing almost 400hp to the stock rear now and I beat the hell out of it with no problems. I had an 82 Grand Prix with the stock v-6 rear and I had a 350 in that car too and I beat the hell out of that one with no problems.

I just want a posi rear and higher gears. Rear ends are not my thing but I could rebuild them. I just don't know what goes into them. So I could keep the stock axles, put in a new carrier and and gears. Could anyone direct me to where I can find this at JEGS or Summit maby?

OK so if I went with an Eaton posi unit and 373 gears, would that work? I am going to a swap meet in 2 months so if I can find them there I will buy them. If I find a whole rear for cheap I will just buy that.

I don't see why not. Way I see it you can build up a 7.5 with good strong parts and it'll last quite a while, just don't beat it up with slicks and holeshots all the time.

Sounds good to me, it's not like I plan on doing a Turbo install on my 350  ...

I was toying with the idea of doing a cheap turbo setup. Have a lot of ideas just need to see what will work and how cheap I can do it.
