Hi guys I have an 84 pontiac grand prix currently running a small block 350 nothing special with a 350 trans im looking for opinions on a good street strip gear. Some time here in the future I plan on doing some work to the motor or possibly using a 400 pontiac I have laying around whatever I do with the motor i'm looking for opinions on a gear and what to do to give the car a good launch off the line i'm new to the drag race stuff always ran in circles on the dirt an advice would be appreciated thanks

A 350 sbc behaves very differently than a 400 Pontiac. I'd think 3.73 or even 4.10 for the 350. The Pontiac could probably get by with 3.55s or 3.73s.

Thanks i know the 400 is going to be alittle more wild in this car but thats what i'm looking for just don't have the cash to build one right now pretty costly for a pontiac vs a sbc so for the mean time just looking to have some fun with it.

agree with 3:73 with a TH 350. had 4:56 with a TH350 and on the street was a lot of rpm. 1/8 mile perfect; 1/4 ran out of motor.

What your goals are going to be has a lot to do with the gear you pic.

You might want to think of what type of transmission you're going to end up using too.
If it's TH350/TH400 that's going to be driven miles on the freeway or something like that I'd keep it to around 3.42 or 3.73.
Also keep in mind the taller your tire the less rpm the engine will spin at a given mph.

On my last driver I went 3.42 gear with a 26 tall tire and a TH350. Sure it could have used a 4.10 around town but when on the freeway I was glad I went 3.42.

Imo 3.42 gears are a good all around gear with a 26" tall tire. But you could go 3.73 with a 28" tire and be just as good.
